Kraken vs OKX in Europe: Spot Costs, Custody and the Better Fit

Last checked: 4 October 2026. Audience: EU and EEA readers comparing a defined crypto transaction. Public-document review and hypothetical calculations, not an execution, support-speed or withdrawal benchmark. Cryptoassets can lose value; this is general information.

Kraken or OKX? In the documented entry-level spot scenario below, OKX's announced EEA spot-only commission is lower. That does not establish the cheapest complete purchase, the safest platform or a universal winner. Choose from your country, account, intended transaction and final destination; compare instant buying separately from an order-book trade.

Commercial disclosure: TRM has commercial relationships with Kraken and OKX and may earn compensation through qualifying links in the individual guides. No compensation or customer reward determines this verdict. This article links to those editorial guides; their disclosures and provider terms apply.

Round one: does the service fit your country?

The ESMA file downloaded on 4 October includes Payward Europe Solutions Limited for Kraken and OKX Europe Limited for OKX, with no end date recorded for these entries. A brand can use more than one entity. Match your contract and intended service rather than treating a group name as permission for every product. Check the official register.

EU/EEA coverage does not automatically include the UK or Switzerland, nor every feature on a global homepage. A product unavailable to you contributes nothing to the comparison. If residence or contracting entity remains unresolved, there is no defensible winner yet.

Round two: identical spot-order commissions

Kraken's published Spot Crypto Tier 1 table shows 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. Other tiers and pair categories differ, and the page warns that geography can affect displayed rates. Read Kraken's fee schedule.

OKX's notice effective 25 September 2026 at 10:00 UTC+2 gives regular EEA spot-only clients 0.10% maker and 0.20% taker for its all-pairs category excluding stablecoin and zero-fee pairs. This is a specific announced schedule, not a measured account quote. Read the dated EEA spot-only notice.

Hypothetical €1,000 order at those rates: Kraken maker €4, taker €8; OKX maker €1, taker €2. The arithmetic isolates the order commission. It excludes spread, price movement, funding, conversion, withdrawal and tier changes. You must qualify for the stated category and check your own fee screen. A resting limit order can differ from an immediately matched order.

Verdict for this round: OKX has the lower documented commission in this narrowly defined scenario. If your account is outside its spot-only scope, use the fee schedule applicable to you and recalculate. Do not copy an older EEA schedule into this scenario without its date and scope.

Round three: an occasional €100 purchase

A small instant purchase followed by withdrawal is a different contest. Neither the maker/taker illustration above nor a promotional offer establishes its total delivered cost. Compare the final quote for the same asset, funding method and destination. Then add the actual withdrawal charge and minimum for the same network.

Original hypothetical example: if route A delivers €97 worth of the intended asset and route B delivers €98 to the same final destination at the same reference price, B has the better delivered value in that example. Those invented figures are not Kraken or OKX quotes. A platform cannot win this round without comparable current previews.

For recurring €100 purchases, repeat the comparison over the intended number of purchases, including any subscription commitment. A saving at one order size can disappear when a fixed withdrawal charge or paid plan enters the calculation. Keep reward value separate until eligibility and payout are established.

Round four: custody and exit

An exchange account and a self-custody wallet allocate responsibilities differently. Decide who controls access, how authentication and recovery work, what happens if withdrawals are restricted, and whether you can use the required external network. An attractive fee cannot compensate for an exit you cannot use.

Read the Kraken guide for Kraken versus Kraken Pro, and the OKX guide for Exchange versus Wallet and delivered-asset comparison. These are documentary guides, not proof that TRM tested an order or a wallet migration. Recheck live terms before using a dated example.

The decision, by use case

For an eligible regular EEA spot-only account focused on the documented order commission, put OKX on the shortlist first, then check the whole route. For a reader already using Kraken, calculate whether an actual saving outweighs funding, migration, withdrawal and learning costs. For occasional purchases, obtain comparable final quotes before choosing either.

There is no evidence here to award either provider a universal security or support trophy. Choose neither if country eligibility, custody, potential loss or withdrawal constraints do not fit. A referral offer cannot repair that mismatch.

Questions that change the answer

Is OKX always cheaper? No. The calculated advantage concerns a dated spot-only fee category and hypothetical order, not every service or account.

Is a MiCA entry a guarantee of safety? No. It identifies an entity and authorised services; market and operational risks remain.

Should I switch platforms for a bonus? First compare the transaction you would choose without it, including the cost and effort of leaving.

What to monitor next

Over six to twenty-four months, fee tiers, banking routes and country-specific services could change this verdict. That is a scenario, not a forecast. Preserve your comparison inputs and revisit only material changes. Faster AI shortlists are useful when they expose the date, account scope and calculation rather than hiding them.
